1000 Miles: Walking & Painting the Way of Saint James

On 1 September 2018, I set out to walk and paint the Way of Saint James, also known as the Camino de Santiago de Compostela. I walked 1000 miles (1600km) through France and Spain alongside my donkey, Dupon, stopping to paint en plein air every 5 miles (8km) along the entire route.
Each painting took 3 hours. The journey took 6 months.
The resulting body of work, consisting of 200 plein air paintings, tells the story of this ancient route as it is today.
This is my most ambitious and monumental work to date. Placed end to end, the paintings span 200 linear feet (over 60 metres). I hope to take the entire exhibition – the paintings with their accompanying narratives – on a live tour once travel is permitted again.

Through the 200 plein air paintings and their accompanying narrative, Sharon shares her conversation with the landscape, reflecting on both the fleeting nature of the present moment and the timelessness of this ancient route, gradually revealing its sense of place and connecting us to a journey that has been continuously undertaken over generations for more than a thousand years.
